Science at Cheapside School

At Cheapside School, our vision is to give children a science curriculum which enables them to confidently explore and discover the world around them, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. We aim to create fun and stimulating science lessons that nurture children’s natural curiosity and their on-going development. Through a hands-on, enquiry-based curriculum which promotes questioning, challenge, working practically, investigating, evaluating, making choices, working independently and using scientific vocabulary, children also develop an understanding of how important and relevant science is to their lives.

Science is taught weekly in all year groups; children are encouraged to make links across the curriculum as well as through these discrete lessons. Children also have the opportunity to explore their scientific thinking and learning during Forest School sessions. Each year our Year 6 children hold a Science Fair and in the Spring Term we celebrate British Science Week, focusing on a shared theme across the school.

During these learning opportunities our children build from prior learning and consolidate their skills, knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles within the areas of biology, chemistry and physics. Through a focus on practical science, Cheapside allows the children substantial opportunities to demonstrate working scientifically by generating scientific questions and collaborating with their peers.

Children at Cheapside Primary School will:

  • Demonstrate a love of science work and an interest in further study and work in this field;
  • Retain knowledge that is pertinent to science with a real-life context;
  • Be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge;
  • Be able to articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically
    using rich language linked to science;
  • Demonstrate a high love of mathematical skills through their work, organising, recording and
    interpreting results;
  • Work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
