R.E. & Worldviews at Cheapside School
At Cheapside, our aim is to make Religious Education a meaningful, relevant and real subject which covers Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development, British Values and Mindfulness supporting children’s RE learning as well as their personal spiritual development.
As a Christian school, we follow a scheme of learning called Discovery RE. It’s a comprehensive, enquiry-based scheme which has Christianity at its core but which is also inclusive and accepting of world religions with specific units on Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism which span across the academic years. RE is taught in accordance with the Pan-Berkshire Agreed Syllabus. The additional 7 hours taught in KS2 are devoted to learning about Worldviews.
Each academic year, six discrete units are taught across the six half-terms and approximately two thirds of these are focused on Christianity incorporating key festivals such as Christmas and Easter. The other units each year are dedicated to one of the religions detailed above and within those units will also include key religious festivals e.g. Diwali when studying Hinduism or Eid when studying Islam.
The non-Christian units are as follows:
- Reception – Key questions which will include reflective work on all the religions listed.
- Year 1 – Judaism
- Year 2 – Islam
- Year 3 – Hinduism and Sikhism
- Year 4 – Judaism
- Year 5 – Sikhism and Hinduism
- Year 6 - Islam
