Geography at Cheapside School

Teaching and Learning
At Cheapside Primary School, we aim to ensure that all pupils receive high quality geography teaching, which motivates and inspires them to become global citizens.

We recognise the importance of cross-curricular, exciting topics to give geography a meaningful context, whilst directly addressing the objectives of the curriculum.

At Cheapside, we encourage children to be open-minded and excited to learn about other places. This includes a special focus on the awareness of protecting both our local school environment and the global environment. Geography is taught as a cycle of topics over the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.

Our Vision for Geography at Cheapside School.

  • At Cheapside, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, its interconnectedness and their place in it.
  • The geography curriculum at Cheapside enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
  • Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills
  • The curriculum is designed to ensure that teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through the school, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.
  • To ensure that the teaching of Geography across the school allows pupils to develop a good range of knowledge, about their local environment, the UK and other countries in the world.
  • To provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and gain experience of Geography fieldwork skills. The teaching should develop pupils’ geographical knowledge and thinking, and, as a result, enable them to show their geographical understanding, particularly through their use of geographical vocabulary.
  • To ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to ask questions, research
evidence, draw conclusions and communicate their findings.
  • To further consolidate the learning in Geography by making specific links
to other subjects. For example: Descriptive writing about volcanoes, or
studying Indian traditional tales in English, Dance or Music from other
    cultures in PE and Music.
  • To strive to build on the links with Geography and Global Citizenship.
