Key Stage 1

The key purpose of homework at Key Stage 1 is to develop a partnership with parents involving them in children’s learning. The activities should be short and varied and enjoyable. Eg: spellings, reading and maths activities.

Key Stage 2

As children progress through the school, homework provides an opportunity for children to develop their skills in independent learning. It is important that children should gradually get into the habit of regularly devoting periods of time to study on their own with a regular weekly schedule. This will help to ensure that transfer to secondary school is a smooth as possible. The type of activities may include:

• Reading and discussion of texts

• Learning spellings and meanings

• Practising times tables, number bonds etc

• Science/Maths revision for SATs

• Research for topic work
